On Scene Review: Shelby Flex-Tuff Gloves

-Our blog, On Scene with TheFireStore & The FireGeezer Blog are working together doing a review program of products we think you'll benefit from hearing an inside perspective. -

I was asked to wear and review the new Shelby Flex-Tuff Gloves. The gloves I tested were size small and fit me appropriately. I was able to wear these gloves during both operational settings and training evolutions. I have been using the gloves for about a month and have worn them under a number of conditions while performing a range of fire fighting skills. Overall I was very pleased with these gloves and would recommend them to anybody interested in trying something new.

The dexterity that I have while using these gloves is much greater than others I have worn to include the Shelby style 5228’s that I was previously issued. The “Trigger Finger” design coupled with the separately stitched thumb allow for excellent control when dealing with fine motor operations. This was perhaps most evident in training that I was able to participate in on Mayday/RIT operations. I was able to easily feel all components of the tools I was working with which was vital as I was training in no visibility conditions.

Overall the protection these gloves offer from heat seems to be top notch. I was able to utilize these gloves on a few scenarios where there was active fire and they held up very well. I was not however able to test these gloves under extreme heat conditions such as a large structure fire and hence cannot speak for their prolonged heat resistance capabilities. With that said however, the fires I encountered did no damage to the gloves and their design remained true.

Perhaps one of the most overlooked assets to a good pair of gloves is the ease of donning and doffing. These gloves were a gem. I was able to not only put the gloves on quickly but also remove them easily should the need ever arise for such an instance. This was true for both dry and wet conditions. I was most impressed by this fact when I donned the gloves when dealing with a L.P. Gas emergency. I was working under a blanket of water and my gloves got soaked. This did not affect the wearability of these gloves at all. Nor did it affect the inner liner as is commonly seen in fire gloves.

An additional perk to these gloves is the leather backing. I don’t know if it was by design or not but it is very easy to clean and helps to keep toxins away from your face. This is especially true in my case as I tend to wipe my face a lot out of habit. In fact after wiping the gloves down after our L.P. Gas emergency I could not even detect an odor from the gloves. This is especially nice as nowadays we tend to face fires that involve some pretty nasty substances.

For a number of reasons I have already discussed including dexterity, protection and wear, these gloves are very good. While the Flex-Tuff designed gloves do cost more, I believe that the difference in price is more than made up with the benefits of the glove. As such I would again stress my recommendation of these gloves to those looking for something more than their “normal” firefighting gloves.

Gearmasters: The History

We haven't talked much about our GEARMASTERS line here on the blog yet. I think it's time to fix that because GEARMASTERS is a crucial part of this company!

In fact, GEARMASTERS is the foundation of how TheFireStore came to be and how we got our foot in the Fire Industry to begin with! It began when our CEO, Jim Witmer and his brother, Greg (former restaurant equipment salesmen) attended their first firefighters trade show. At this show they got the idea for turnout gear storage rack systems using the restaurant racking they'd been selling and working with all this time.

They went to the drawing board and began designing their own turnout gear storage racks for firehouses. Jim was able to use his own knowledge of being in the firefighting service to design and sell exactly what he felt was needed to make these things a success!

It didn't stop there with just the basic Econo-Storage Racks, though. They went on to create and design and add to their line the Air-Dry Coat hanger and Glove hanger, special Command-Wall racks, lockers, benches, and more!

GEARMASTERS will always be a special part of the history of TheFireStore! Since it is indeed the foundation where it all began, making TheFireStore what it is today.

On Scene Review: TFT Hydrant Wrench and Multi-Tool

-Our blog, On Scene with TheFireStore & The FireGeezer Blog are working together doing a review program of products we think you'll benefit from hearing an inside perspective. -

We have been carrying the TFT Hydrant Wrench for a few weeks now and have found it to be a good wrench that is easy to use and surprisingly light in weight.

Using the large "claw" it tightens up the steamer connection handily without slipping.

The square nut wrench on the other end also serves as good lever to tighten or loosen rabbit-ear couplings.
Technician Davis liked the extra leverage while turning on a sticky hydrant valve by taking advantage of the nut head being in the center of the wrench allowing the use of two hands on each side. It seemed to make it easier to turn on the valve.
Using the large spanner on supply line couplings to the pump panel worked fine, but using the smaller lug wrench on discharges is too cumbersome to bother with. It would be ok in a pinch or to use when breaking down a line later, but the standard spanners are better suited for that.

But it is primarily a hydrant wrench and it is a very good tool for that. The specially-formed grip along the shaft is a bonus, making it a little safer and easier to use.
Lieutenant Cunningham shows the relative sizes of the TFT wrench compared to the standard hydrant wrench. The TFT wrench is made of an aluminum alloy and its 2-½ lb. weight surprises you the first time you pick one up. The "old" hydrant wrenches weigh about 5 lbs.

Overall, we really like using the new wrench and from our experience so far would recommend it.

On Scene Reviews: Res-Q-Rench

-Our blog, On Scene with TheFireStore & The FireGeezer Blog are working together doing a review program of products we think you'll benefit from hearing an inside perspective. -

I recently had the opportunity to use the Res-Q-Rench for this review. I previously had this tool in my PPE and used it often for different applications. The different uses for this tool make it very versatile while still maintaining a sleek and compact design to fit in my gear.

The tools light weight is an added benefit, it's like having multiple tools but only taking up space for one.

I distinctly remember using it on auto accidents, with the window punch and the prying tool to remove trim from the interior of the vehicles. It also has a seatbelt cutter blade in it.

It's also nice to have as a driver-operator because while keeping it in my pocket I was able to tighten couplings on hose lines while not having to carry the bulky metal wrenches.

When I was done with the tool I simply folded it up and placed it back in my pocket under my fire gloves. I would definitely recommend this tool to any firefighter that wants to be ready for any task.

    On Location: Graphics Department/Vehicle Striping

Every department and location play a role in making TheFireStore a success. That's why we like to highlight the different roles that these departments play and give you a little peek into them!

TheFireStore Graphics Department is located within the Abbottstown Division of Witmer Public Safety Group. We are currently staffed with 2 Full-Time employees having a combined 25 plus years design and production experience. We use a solvent inkjet printing process which provides top quality outdoor durability. We laminate every item that we print to give added protection against UV degradation and to extend the life of your product. We are able to produce a variety of products, but we specialize in decals of all sizes, license plates, and vehicle graphics.

With respect to vehicle graphics, we work with all scopes of vehicles from utility ATVs, Chiefs’ vehicles, service/utility and brush trucks to full-size apparatus such as engines, heavy rescues and ladders. Our limits do not end there. Law enforcement cruisers, SUVs and SWAT/armored vehicles stand within our abilities. We work with paramedic chase vehicles and ambulances as well.

We have worked with brand new apparatus that has been ordered from factory without graphics, saved just for our special touch. We also work with existing apparatus following body repairs and upgrades.

For merged departments, we specialize in planning your existing apparatus and retro-fitting them to provide a uniform, coherent appearance with the logos and designations that mesh with your new identity. Reflective, Non-Reflective and Imitation Gold Leaf Vinyls make every one of our projects unique and durable.

With the change to NFPA 1901 in 2009, TheFireStore Graphics Department has retro-fitted many apparatus with the compliant Chevron Striping. We use the most practical reflective products best suited for the application on diamond plate and flat areas.
Any questions or need some work done? You can contact the Graphics Department at graphics@thefirestore.com or 1-800-834-0839.

Despite TheFireStore slogan being “Everything But The Truck,” we like to say “We Lettered The Truck.”
