Among the many dangers firefighters constantly confront is
cancer, an especially prevalent disease in the firefighting community,
according to data gathered by the National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health and the U.S. Fire Administration. In order to combat the increasing
rates of cancer among firefighters – specifically, mesothelioma, a rare form of
cancer with a poor diagnosis that firefighters are twice as likely to develop
than the general population – many departments have issued Cancer Awareness and
Prevention Directives (CAPD) to ensure gear is decontaminated and laundered
after each exposure to fire.
TheFireStore and MSA have partnered to help facilitate CAPD
implementation by providing a free Cairns
Soft Goods Kit to accompany purchases of select composite helmets – 1010’S,
1044’S, 660’S, 664’S, Deluxe 880’s, and HP3’s – during the month of May. The
Cairns Soft Goods Kit, an $80 value, includes a number of useful items:
- standard liner
- nomex earlaps
- Velcro tabs
- mesh laundering bag
